Pre-Macon County

Macon County History begins in 1842 with the formation of the new county. However, there is some vast history regarding the area prior to its formation as "Macon County". Learn more about what is now known as Macon County was like before it was officially formed.

Formation of a New County

The creation of Macon County was initiated in the late 1820s / early 1830s. In 1834, citizens of then Smith County petitioned the 1834 Tennessee Constitutional Convention as to the law regarding the formation of new counties. The settlers of these portions of Smith County must have had some effect, as the Convention passed new legislation making the formation of new counties, easier.

County Government

Macon County Government began in 1842 once the new county was formed. The act that founded Macon County provided that the former justices living in the now new county would govern the county until an election could be held and new officers elected. The justices met first in the house of William Dunn, until the election would be held and an official government formed.
